The Mamuthones
Step, step, step, thump! The dark shaggy figures march in unison, and at every third step make a lopsided jump, and the bells hanging off them give a dolorous clang. As the tolling of the bells grows louder, a shiver of excitement, tinged with trepidation, passes through the crowd: the Mamuthones are coming. They are the ‘negative figures’ representing bad spirits and the chill and dark of winter for more than two thousand years. Here, in the mountainous little town of Mamoida, interior of Sardinia, it is all pagan and gnarly, appropriately for the setting.
